REVENGE OF THE MINI-MUSICALS! traces its origins to Mercury Players’ annual 24-hour “Blitz,” beginning in 2000. In each Blitz at least one of the plays written, rehearsed and performed in 24 hours was a musical. Pioneered by Andrew Rohn and Catherine Capellaro of Temp Slave and Walmartopia fame, other writers and composers have stepped up take the genre to a whole new level.
REVENGE OF THE MINI-MUSICALS! features two musicals originally performed in the 2005 Blitz, and two brand new musicals, selected from local submissions.
THE SHOWS:
From Blitz 2005
Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy
by Catherine Capellaro and Andrew Rohn (Temp Slave, Walmartopia)
The exploits of an all-male exotic dance revue on an all-female cruise ship. It’s romance and adventure on the high seas when a group of body-conscious guys must bare it all to follow their dreams.
Discordia’s Sunshine Death
by Rob Matushita (Orange Murder Suit) and Morey Burnard
A secluded cabin in the woods with a gruesome history hosts the murderous misadventures of five teenagers on a summer camping trip. It’s a toe-tapping homage to slasher flicks.
Brand new premieres:
Bingo Night at the First Church of Saint Darwin
by Jonathan Zarov (Swamp Thing; Yammer; host of WORT’s Friday morning 8 O’Clock Buzz)
Intelligent Design? Big Bang? A group of cash-strapped scientists finds the formula for success by taking on organized religion and creating their own Pope of Science. This absurdist romp pits Man against God, all in the name of Bingo.
Gaystroke: The Legend of Tarthan
by Douglas Holtz (Homeland)
Can the Queen of the Jungle save his home from the evil land developer? Will Jane give up her city ways and go native? Does Biff really swing that way? A campy gay twist on the legendary tale.
